Designing includes four main types as industrial designing, graphic designing, product designing and
prototype designing. Out of these four, industrial design is an applied art through which aesthetics and
usability of mass-produced products may be improved for marketability and production. The role of an
Industrial Designer is to create and execute design solutions towards problems of form, usability,
user ergonomics, engineering, marketing, brand development and sales. |

Graphic design means a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual
communication and presentation. Various methods like typogrphy, visual arts are used in making and
combining symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages.
Graphic design often refers to both the process i.e. designing by which the communication is created
and the products i.e. designs like magazines, advertisements. |

Product design can be defined as the idea generation, concept development, testing and manufacturing
or implementation of a physical object or service. In this, the ideas are conceptualized and evaluated.
It is somewhat similar to industrial design, which defines activities, such as service design, systems
design and interaction design. Aesthetics, technology, ergonomics, usability, stress analysis and materials
engineering all are considered very important in Product Designing.

Many times, there is great uncertainty as to whether a new design will actually do what is desired.
New designs often have unexpected problems. Prototype design is often used as part of the product design
process to allow engineers and designers the ability to explore design alternatives, test theories and
confirm performance prior to starting production of a new product. A common strategy used, is to design,
test, evaluate and modify the design based on analysis of the prototype. |
